3 Priorities as You Plan Your Trip to Alaska
After deciding to take the plunge and head off on your trip to Alaska you are faced with the inevitable question ‘How can I best plan this vacation’? Follow these tips and make every moment of your Alaskan adventure worthwhile
Determine the Length of Your Trip to Alaska and Your Budget
These are the core fundamentals around which you can plan your Alaskan vacation. Everything else depends on them and can be worked around them. The longest, most expensive holidays are not always the best, so any limits to your time or budget are not good or bad, just important to be clear about. Now you can begin plan how to best use your time and budget.
Prioritize Your Experiences
Ask yourself questions like ‘What do I know about Alaska’? ‘What do I know I’d like to see or do’? or ‘What do I think I’d like to see or do’? Research the answers to these questions and get reliable travel agents to help you.
Seek out friends who have traveled there and have them share their experiences. Use this information to refine your Alaskan vacation priorities. Be prepared to eliminate some experiences. We always wanted to see polar bears in the wild in Alaska. Three trips later, this still remains too expensive to include in our itinerary.
Decide on How to Travel
If ocean travel is not your favorite way to travel you may still consider traveling along the Marine Inland Passage because of its protected waters. You will still see some of Alaska’s most picturesque scenery along its coastline. Braver ocean travelers might consider cruising along the Gulf of Alaska. Shorter day cruises are available from ports like Juneau or Ketchikan to destinations large cruise ships can’t reach.
If you live in Seattle or Vancouver you can cruise to and from Alaska. Everyone else needs to fly. There are regular flights to these cities or directly to Anchorage. Travelers in Alaska also take small planes to some of the more inaccessible parts of the state.
RV travel is a popular way to travel during your land travel in Alaska. They are great mobile homes and can be stationed overnight in any of the large number of RV parks around the state.
Alaska railways can transport you to and from major centers in Alaska for day trips or for longer stays. The advantage of traveling like this at least for some of your trip is the provision of marvelous scenery without driving!
Include these key planning components as you prepare for your trip to Alaska and decide who if anyone you will need to assist you. You are bound to enjoy the trip of a lifetime within time and budget and do everything that you planned to achieve.
