Bears in Alaska, How to Share Your Vacation with Them
If you are planning an outdoors vacation to ‘The Land of the Midnight Sun’ you can expect to share this with bear of some kind. There are plenty of bears in Alaska, especially in areas of dense vegetation and they are easy to find.
Alaska’s National Parks Service provide detailed information about precautions to take when in bear country so that both visitors and bears are protected.
Allowing bears plenty of space by moving out of the area or quietly watching them from a distance is a advice worth following in the first instance. Encounters with bears can be a safe experience however if you are informed and follow the advice of those experienced in this field.
These tips will help you decide how to share with the bears from a distance!
Keep a consistent look out for bear scat and tracks, especially for these seem recent. The earlier you are aware of bears in Alaska that may be near you, the more time you will have to prepare for an encounter.
Watch out for bear trails to gauge some idea of where they may travel. They often follow lakeshores or ridgelines.
Watch out for bear marks (scratches or hair) on trees or logs as well as large dug out areas where bears may sleep or rub regularly.
Keep clear of salmon streams. Bears fish for salmon and don’t enjoy being interrupted. The noise of the stream may make allow them to see you first!
Always make enough noise to avoid surprising a bear unnecessarily. Keep out of areas where your visibility is restricted and make noise when leaving your tent.
Store food in Bear Resistant Food Containers. Keep all your food (including snacks and even food wrappers) in these containers between meals. Don’t store food in your tent overnight. Store your food in bear resistant containers along with clean cooking utensils hidden in thick bush at least 100 yards from your tent.
Make sure to cook and eat food at least 100 yards from your tent site. Find a clear eating area where you are unlikely to encounter a bear passing through. If you are near water, cook near the water line so that eating and cooking smells will be washed away by the tide.
Bears in Alaska belong there. Those of us who visit their home in Alaska can do this and remain safe by following clearly published advice like this, from the National Parks Service of the US Department of the Interior.
