Alaskan Land Tours Well Worth Taking
Although viewing Alaska is spectacular from a cruise ship, there are other highlights that await travelers inland in this great state. The following Alaskan land tours are all worth considering as an addition to your cruise along Alaska’s spectacular coastline.
Denali National Park
Featuring Mt McKinnley also called its Athabascan Indian name, ‘Denali’this park is the home of some of Alaska’s brown bears, Dall sheep, moose and caribou that can be viewed from bus rides available across summer when the park is open. This park offers rafting, kayaking, flights around Mt McKinnley.
Alaskan Rail Tours
Return runs from Anchorage to Seward and Anchorage to Fairbanks offer a day of breathtaking scenery without any need to drive. Views not available from any road and informed commentaries by young Alaskan enthusiasts are a highlight of these Alaskan land tours.
Anchorage
Alaska’s largest city Anchorage is well worth a visit inland. Be prepared to sight see, discover some of Alaska’s Native heritage, walk some of the many trails around the city, shop and visit museums and galleries.
Fairbanks
Alaska’s next largest city, Fairbanks is the most northern city in the US and experiences long days of 20+hours in summer. Established during the gold rush, this city has evidence of this time. Take a riverboat cruise along the Chen and Tanana rivers or raft and canoe on these, and see musk ox , reindeer.
Columbia Glacier and Prince William Sound
Columbia Glacier is a tidewater glacier emptying into the sea. It is found in Prince William Sound. Calving from its enormous face happens regularly and large icebergs are formed as a result. Prince William Sound has 20 glaciers in all and is home to many of Alaska’s water and land wild life including sea lions, seals, otters, whales, and dolphins. Bald eagles and puffins are found in the air.
Wrangell-St. Elias National Park
This is the largest national park in the world and home to the largest number of glaciers and high -mountain peaks in the US. It is populated by many of Alaska’s mountain wildlife especially the Dall sheep and it is breathtakingly beautiful.
Valdez
Situated on Prince William Sound in a very picturesque location, this little town is gateway to fishing and glacier viewing there. It was also affected by Alaska’s large earthquake in March 1964 and an extensive oil spillage. Historical displays provide authentic evidence of how this town dealt with these disasters and moved on.
Any of these Alaskan Land Tours add to the grandeur of a cruise along Alaska’s spectacular coastline, exploring this a little further or show-casing it’s magnificent inland scenery.
