3 Compelling Reasons to Travel on Alaska Trains
I’ve traveled to Alaska many times and always found journeys on the famous Alaskan railway always add an extra dimension to my vacations. Alaska trains travel to places untouched even by roads and offer breathtaking views of the real pristine Alaska.
Reason 1
I love taking Alaska trains when I want to take in the scenery without navigating roadways and negotiating with their traffic. I love taking Alaska trains to leave the commentary and the research for this, to well-informed locals employed by the rail company. I enjoy their pleasure in spotting a mountain goat or the bear ‘on the right hand side, half way up the mountain’ or ‘the bald eagle on the top of the tree at the next turn’.
Like everything else in Alaska, Alaska trains run May through September. They provide relative comfort and exceptional access to the interior of Alaska.
Rail travel appeals to a wide range of travelers in Alaska from the cruise/rail package vacationers to those more independent day trippers like me and even to the locals, curious to see a non-road route to another part of their state.
Reason 2
Package tours appeal to those who prefer their vacation to be organized by expert locals. These run for 6-12 days, include accommodation and offer a variety experiences ranging from hiking, panning for gold, dog sledding, fijord cruises, jet boat rides, river floats, flight seeing, glacier viewing and even a riverboat ride. Prices vary from around $1700 to around $5000 per person.
The Alaska Railway travels as far north to the Interior as the city of Fairbanks via Mt McKinley and Denali National Park and as far south as Seward. Train packages can take you on as many as three trains and include off train experiences in some of Alaska’s better known national parks and forests.
If you like to plan your vacation in some ways, you can even ‘build your own’ package from some of the shorter trips available.
Reason 3
Day trips on Alaska trains take in a return trip to Chugah, Spencer Glacier, glacier filled Grandview Valley, Prince William Sound, Resurrection Bay at Seward, Kenai Fjords National Park, Talkeetna, Denali National Park an Susitna River on the Hurricane Turn Train and range in cost from $64 to $270 per person.
