7 Ways to Really Enjoy Being an Alaska Tourist
You may think that the term ‘Alaska tourist’ would, in itself, imply enjoyment. Yes it generally does, as most travelers can’t help but enjoy the spectacle of this part of the world but we’ve found the following tips helped us get the very most form this experience as we’ve traveled around Alaska several times.
Travel Well Prepared
Take or stock up on plenty of insect repellant in summer. Travel light, but always include clothing warm enough for a cruise past a glacier and waterproof enough to manage southern Alaskan rain or a seafaring cruise or fishing expedition.
Prepare for the Great Outdoors
Alaska’s greatest grandeur is outdoors so take very opportunity to fly, drive, hike, sail, kayak, cycle or at the very least drive or take a train to see the many faces of Alaska. This isn’t a travel destination for indoor folk.
Plan Your Budget
Do this ahead of time so that your itinerary can be accommodated. Hold a little in reserve for emergencies but even if you decide on an ‘open itinerary’ make sure you’ve investigated cost and don; get caught short.
Search for Alaska’s Uniqueness
This won’t be difficult, as there is a unique quality to the history, scenery and the people who live here. The Alaska tourist looking for this is always more impressed than the tourist who comes in search of his own experience of the world at home.
Step Up, Push Your Limits
Within the realms of commonsense and safety be prepared to undertake those things you may not do at home. Don’t miss a close up look at Mt McKinnley because of your fear of small planes. Dose up on seasickness pills and sit outside rather than miss the halibut expedition. Never say ‘No’ as an Alaska tourist if you can possibly help it.
Don't look for Sophisticated Metroplises
They’re no where to be found in Alaska. Even Anchorage is a sprawling city of around 250,000 with more impressive trails in the city than fashion shops. There is an air of bohemia here and more so in Juneau that make them interesting but be prepared for shops largely sell (often very impressive) Alaskan made goods.
Sleep Well to Maintain your Stamina
Alaska’s summer is its busiest tourist season as well as its season of long days with sunlight for up to 23 hours. Don’t be seduced by the extended daylight. Get a normal night’s sleep so you can enjoy the following day’s opportunities in this incredible place.
Be well prepared as an Alaska tourist to enjoy this so much that like us you return to be one again and again!
