Travel to Alaska from the Lower 49 – 3 Options for Different Kinds of Travelers
Alaska isn’t known as a frontier state because it borders down-town Manhattan.
It is about as out of the way as you can find in the United Sates and even further from other countries. This has never been a deterrent to those who want to travel to Alaska. In fact it makes the idea of traveling there even more exciting. Consider which of these travel options would best suit you.
Car or RV
There are a limited number of access roads into Alaska from Canada. These are for travelers with plenty of time to travel to Alaska through Canada from the rest of mainland US (referred to by local Alaskans as ‘the lower 48th’). Travelers who drive to Alaska are generally not restricted by time and can be seen each year fishing for salmon or visiting a place they ‘missed last year’.
This kind of travel to Alaska requires careful preparation. You need to gather all the facts about road conditions, customs requirements, driving tips, overnight stopping places, gas stops and a the contents of an emergency kit. Alaskan and Canadian laws about firearms vary so acquaint your self with these.
Cruise Ship or Ferry
An alternative, slower option for travel to Alaska is either a cruise or use of the local Alaskan Ferry Service. Cruises often depart from Vancouver and follow set itineraries which include stops at pre-determined destinations along the Alaskan coast line. Alaska’s spectacular marine and bird life and scenery can be seen along the famous Inland Passage and, because of the protected nature of this great waterway, you can also be guaranteed a smooth trip.
Plane
Those with a tighter vacation schedule to follow, generally travel to Alaska by plane, landing in Anchorage. Seattle is the most northern departure point on the US mainland and there are no flights from Vancouver to Anchorage. Alaska Air the state airline, offers good rates and frequent flights in and out of Anchorage and it flies to each of the most popular destinations within the state.
