Anchorage Travel – 3 Tips to Help You Enjoy Anchorage
Spread out across a valley known as the Anchorage Bowl, Anchorage is Alaska’s largest city. Metropolitan Anchorage is a suburban city like many others in the US but it includes large parks and trails where Alaskan wildlife flourish.
Transport
Anchorage covers an extensive area of the Anchorage Bowl and its expanding! The best transport options in Anchorage are a car (or RV) or the metropolitan ‘People Mover’ bus system. We took buses to many parts of Anchorage and we were impressed with how they ran on time. We highly recommend the courtesy and helpful assistance of their bus drivers who after a short time recognized us!
Don’t Rush Away, There’s Plenty to See
Anchorage and its immediate surrounds have much to offer Anchorage travel enthusiasts. There are many well advertised places of interest in Anchorage that we visited. The Anchorage Museum of History and Art, the Alaska Native Heritage Centre and The Alaska Native Medical Center are all well worth seeing and provide the local cultural and socio historical background helpful for travelers to Anchorage. But there’s more, much more. Salmon fishing, bicycle riding, cross country skiing and hiking in a number of large parks makes this a city of outdoor opportunities too.
A resident of Anchorage sat next to us as we flew in to Anchorage for the first time. He loved living in Anchorage and offered us his tips for a good time there. His recommended list of ‘Experiences NOT to Miss in Anchorage’ reflected his priorities and his youth. We loved his enthusiasm and investigated most of his suggested highlights below.
Outdoor Fun
• Coastal Trail at Sunset
• Flat Top Hiking (south side will be dry)
• McHugh Park on Turnagain Arm (great views of mountains/ocean)
• Tubing on Mt Alyseska (30 minute drive south of Anchorage)
Dining with Atmosphere and or a View
• Captain Cook’s Crow’s Nest (you get a great perspective of Anchorage)
• Simon and Seaforts (great view)
• Bear’s Tooth (good margaritas!)
• Club Paris (good steaks and history)
• Moose’s Tooth (Pizza, Movie Theater, great atmosphere)
Springboard to the Rest of Ak
As well as enjoying the sights and experiences that Anchorage offers, use it as a springboard to other parts of Alaska. RV hire, car hire, train and plane travel can all be arranged while you are in Anchorage. Stock up on food and fuel at Fred Meyer and travel equipment or Sportsman’s Warehouse. As your Anchorage travel comes to an end, arrange packaged tours or flight seeing tours to Seward, Brooks Falls on the Kenai Peninsular, Prince William Sound, Denali National Park, Talkeetna or any of the other highlights of Alaska. There are plenty of facilities in Anchorage for you to prepare for the rest of your visit to this northern paradise.
