Anchorage Alaska Travel–the Top 3 Places to Visit
Anchorage, located on the Cook Inlet, is one of the world’s northern most cities and was first settled in 1914.
The impressive Chugach Mountains and the Chugack State Park form its south eastern border. Sprawled across the Anchorage Bowl its climate is extreme so this city has needed to be functional more than beautiful.
Often seen as a jumping off point to other destinations more spectacular, it is also home to a number of places that are ‘must sees’ during your Anchorage Alaska travel. You can find your way around Anchorage by car and we found the city buses took us most places we wanted to visit.
Alaska Museum of History and Art is located in the downtown area and houses an extensive collection of art works and of great interest to us, an interpretative history of Alaska from its earliest settlement right through to present day Alaska. Photographs and memorabilia from farming families in the now city of Alaska connected strongly with us. On our first Anchorage Alaska travel experience we met a metro bus driver whose family had featured in one of these displays. The city is small enough for this to happen!
Alaska Native Heritage Center was a great hit with us. It featured local Native American high school kids who performed local songs and dances in a native village setting. This included authentic looking homes representative of different Alaskan tribes an reflected the climate differences throughout Alaska. Local crafts people demonstrated their beading, weaving and other beautiful craft work and this was available for sale.
The Alaska Native Medical Center is our favorite place to see during our Anchorage Alaska travel visits and we return there every time. An incredible collection of native art and artifacts is displayed in the foyer of each level of this medical center. We always learn something new there about customs, clothes or the way of life of each of the Native Alaskan communities. The center’s craft shop is open 10am-2pm Monday through Saturday and sells some of the best arts and crafts in Alaska. The most extensive collection is available at the beginning of summer. Check to see that the goods available for purchase will meet customs regulations in your own country.
