Enjoy Alaska and Travel in an RV – 3 Top Destinations for RV travelers
Anchorage, Alaska’s largest city is a functional city of around 300,000 where many travelers begin their RV vacation. RV drivers collect their vehicles from one of a number of companies there. The hand-over process is thorough and in our case involved a video briefing that featured how to drive and use the RV safely.
RV’s can travel most surfaced roads throughout Alaska. Dirt roads in the more remote parts of this state are not suitable for RV travel.
Drive to Russian River or any river where the salmon are ‘running’. Overnight RV parks are located throughout Alaska especially along its rivers. Tourist centers will provide updates about the best fishing spots. They are an exciting feature of Alaska and travel to them is worth the effort for fishing experiences that can feed you for weeks! We ate salmon for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Talkeetna is north of Anchorage and just off the George Parks Highway at the junction of three river systems. It is a popular RV destination. You can take jet boat rides, raft, fish, bike and ski there. Bush pilots fly small planes from Talkeetna for those who want to experience the close up spectacle of Mt McKinley in a scenic flight. Stay in one of the many RV parks whenever the day draws to a close. Details of these are found in Alaska’s Milepost, an inexpensive visitor’s ‘bible’.
Denali National Park is a stand out attraction in Alaska and travel there is possible in an RV. Home of the well known grizzly bear it also has lynx, Dahl sheep, and marmots as well as an extensive range of bird life. To avoid traffic jams in the roadways throughout this wilderness, rangers provide bus tour access from the park entrance for most visitors. Hiking is an option along the many and varied trails throughout the park. Campgrounds inside the park are popular and reservations for this may be necessary so suggest you check ahead of your arrival there.
