How our Alaska Travels took us to Fairbanks
Friends who lived in Fairbanks made certain that we included this interesting Alaskan town in our most recent Alaska travels. We’re glad they were so persuasive.
How to Get There?
Fairbanks is a little less than 400 miles from Anchorage and located in the heart of interior Alaska. We drove a hire car for our first visit and took our RV second time round. Fairbanks has an international airport with flights from a number of US destinations from the ‘lower 49’. Alaska Airlines, the state airline company provides flights daily between Fairbanks and Anchorage.
Across summer there are daily rail journeys from Fairbanks to Denali National Park, Talkeetna and Anchorage. So you can include your Fairbanks in your Alaska travels as we did via Anchorage or fly directly to Fairbanks and return to Anchorage and from there to Seward and where you can take a cruise ship south.
What’s To See or Do?
Fairbanks is a place of extremes and quintessentially Alaskan. Its temperature swing alone from as low as -60F in winter to 90F in summer makes it unique. Most people visit in summer and only need to prepare for warm dry weather. With extreme winter temperatures the locals in Fairbanks carry survival gear in their cars in the event of a breakdown at this time of the year. Should a winter visit winter appeal, however you are may experience an excellent Northern Lights viewing then.
The city Fairbanks is spread out and home to 80,000 residents. You’ll need a car to get to local attractions. When visited in our RV we could navigate the town easily. We found a good RV park (there was one in the middle of town). Accommodation there includes a number of hotels and private cottages on and around the Chena River that runs through town.
Fairbanks was established on 1901 as a trading post for prospectors searching for gold in the Chena River. Today it is largely an oil town and supplies the workers in the North Slope oil fields. It has an impressive university and a number of popular tourist attractions.
These include the Riverboat Discovery on the Chena River, the University’s museum, and a selection gold mining history tours. For a real taste of this town’s uniqueness, try to time your Alaska travels to Fairbanks so that it corresponds with the Midnight Sun Baseball Classic held annually towards the end of June. The First Pitch is at 10.30pm!
As Fairbanks is located so far north, you can also use it to spring board to parts of the Artic circle. That’s our next plan.
