Alaska Travel Tours – A Tour Worth Including on Your Alaskan Adventure
I have taken many Alaskan travel tours over the years. Most have been day trips but some last longer. I have memories from each of these that will last me a lifetime, especially this one.
Tracy Arm Adventure Bound Cruise is a day trip from Juneau to the spectacular fjord of the same name, located just south of there. Tracy Arm houses several glaciers, the largest of which is Sawyer Glacier.
Large chunks of these glaciers ‘calve’ or break off and float towards the entrance to the fjord.
The cruise departs from Juneau’s harbor just opposite the Goldbelt Hotel. Moored next to enormous cruise liners there, our boat appeared small by comparison but it had everything we needed for a safe journey and the capacity to maneuver and get up close and personal to glaciers, waterfalls and wildlife.
Adventure Bound is a stable sea worthy vessel navigated by a guy who knows his stuff. A commentary at appropriate interludes along the way provided sufficient back ground information for us to appreciate what we were to behold. The 30 mile journey to and from the fjord was interspersed with sightings of whales along the coastline. We even followed one for a time on the way back to Juneau. Wildlife was abundant despite the comparatively cool summer day. Whales, wedge tailed eagles and even Dahl sheep watched us as we watched them.
The real spectacle started when we were far enough into the fjord to notice the floating icebergs. I have taken other Alaska travel tours to see glaciers and these icebergs are as good as they get. It was difficult to get an accurate idea of their size but some were probably the suggested three building stories high. They were a brilliant, breathtaking blue and the subject of some impressive photos.
Sawyer Glacier beckoned us as we made our way around turns in the fjord. It was enormous and predictably very cold. Wear your warmest caps, gloves, jackets and scarves on your tour to Tracy Arm! The dark blue, teal green and then brilliant blue colors of the fjord waters contrasted with the brown granite striations of its towering walls. Evidence of the power of moving glaciers was really evident in this granite.
Hot drinks and food was available but like others on the cruise, we decided that a Subway sandwich and some fruit was a more economical way to eat.
There are many tours to well known and even lesser known geographical spectacles in this state of grandeur and beauty. This day trip to Tracy Arm is one of the best Alaska travel tours on offer.
