Alaska Travel Adventure - 3 Adventures of a Lifetime
Many travelers picture Alaska as our last frontier and imagine an Alaska travel adventure as the best way to experience this.
This is an accurate perception of Alaska as there is plenty of spectacular country there for adventure. Some find a gentle cruise up and down the magnificent Marine Inland Passage adventurous enough but others crave adventure that is off the plane, cruise liner or train or out of the coach.
An Alaska travel adventure requires just as much pre-planning as other vacation, perhaps more, but if you enjoy the pristine wilderness of the world, Alaska has plenty of this to offer. There a number of hikes or paddle adventures in Alaska’s wilderness that appeal to hikers, back packers or kayakers with sufficient experience and equipment to travel this way safely. Novice wilderness travelers who would love the experience should hire a guide. These are three top land trails/water journeys for Alaskan adventurers of differing ability and experience.
Chilkoot Trail
A little over 30 miles long, located behind Skagway in Alaska and stretching into Canada, this is perhaps the most famous walking trail in Alaska. It was used by the gold miners during the Klondite gold rush in the late 1890’s and evidence of this is still present along this trail. Most hikers take 3 or 4 days to complete this hike and many ride the historic White Pass and Yukon railroad as their return trip. An Information Centre in Skagway provides weather details and travel conditions.
Pinnell Mountain Trail
Located north and inland in a completely different part of the state, this Alaska travel adventure runs along tundra ridges and starts 85 miles north east of Fairbanks. It extends for nearly 30 miles and is most spectacular during the middle of summer when you can view the spectacle of the setting sun on the horizon at midnight. Another characteristic of this trail is the wide variety of summer wildflowers.
Endicott Arm Kayak Fjord
South of Juneau, Endicott Arm is a fjord located adjacent to Tracy Arm. These are two of Alaska’s most impressive waterways featuring high granite walls and several glaciers. Travelers exploring Endicott Arm, the quieter of the two, need to be experienced kayakers because of the shipping vessels attracted by the glaciers and large icebergs there. There are more camping spots available in Endicott Arm and kayakers are best dropped off and collected from the end of this fjord.
